Photography Melbourne

About Photography Melbourne

Photography Melbourne is an independent guide for anyone photographing Melbourne, from visitors with a phone to keen amateurs and couples planning a wedding shoot. We publish plain-language guides in three areas: places, covering the CBD laneways, the Yarra and Southbank, the bay and beaches, and parks and gardens; rules, covering photography in public, drones, location permits and copyright; and skills, covering golden hour and weather, night photography, street photography ethics and hiring a photographer. Our free golden hour calculator shows sunrise, sunset, golden hour and blue hour for any date.

Why we exist

Good information about photographing Melbourne is scattered across councils, park managers, CASA, legal centres and photography forums, and much of what circulates online is out of date or wrong. We want to bring it together clearly, in one independent place, with links to the original sources.

How we work

We write every guide in our own words, based on official and expert sources such as the Arts Law Centre of Australia, the City of Melbourne, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Parks Victoria, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Geoscience Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology and the ACCC. We list our sources on each page. We never invent statistics, prices, reviews or quotes, and we don't review, rank or recommend photographers, equipment or businesses.

Independence

Photography Melbourne (photographymelbourne.com.au) is an independent information site. We are not a photography business, council, park manager, government agency or law firm, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by any organisation named on this site, any previous operator of this domain, or any organisation with a similar name.

General information only

Our guides are general information, not legal advice. Permit conditions, CASA rules and land manager policies change, so check the official source before a shoot, especially paid work. For advice about your situation, contact the Arts Law Centre of Australia or a community legal centre.

Feature your business

If you run a genuine photography, printing, camera hire or photo education business and want to reach our readers, see feature your business. Featured listings are always clearly labelled and never affect what our guides say.
